A Deal or A Shady Deal?

Although we believe we offer you the lowest total price (incl. shipping cost) on this item, there are some New York based sites that appear to offer similar or unreasonably low overall prices. There is a strong probability that these offers are not reliable. Because many of these sites are based in Brooklyn, New York (don't be fooled by the address you see on a site), many dealers and New Yorkers, who are familiar with their well documented deceptive business practice, called it "the Brooklyn attitude" , which targets primarily the first-time buyers.

In reading all the negative feedback, if you see a distinctive pattern (virtually no web site outside of this region has this pattern) of chronicle unethical handlings of orders in the area of price, product or shipment date, you know it is probably "the Brooklyn attitude". Ironically, no matter how hard a "Brooklyn attitude" merchant tries to deceive a potential buyer, it cannot defy the sheer law of economics: a seller cannot sell below the cost. Specifically,

  • 3-4 business days after placing an order, a customer does not have a specific shipping date backed up with a tracking No., and his/her credit card is charged anyway, you know it is probably "the Brooklyn attitude". Why? because it simply does not have the real product to honor whatever promised on the site and is still hungry for the money to satisfy its pathetic cash flow need.

  • If a rebate is included in the price (which is illegal), you know it is probably "the Brooklyn attitude".

  • If product is the subject of complaints, that usually means, after placing an order, a customer was sent a different product such as a cheaper and lower version of the product, a previous year model, a floor demo, a used/returned/damaged product, a product not made for the US market without a US warranty.(the owner's manual is a photocopy of the original or in Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese or French), then you know it is probably "the Brooklyn attitude".

  • If price is the subject of complaints, that usually means, after placing an order, a customer gets a call back from an individual asking him/her to pay an extra amount of dollars for a warranty, a shipping upgrade or an insurance then you know it is probably "the Brooklyn attitude" (Warning : some of these sites sell extended warranties provided by CPS, Consumer Priority Service. This is a scam. We called several companies listed as its service centers in May 2007. They were shocked to hear that their names were on the list, being in totally unrelated businesses. The web site: http://www.cpscentral.com/index.aspx has taken the list off the site) Another so-called RepairTech warranty plan is also obviously questionable. In its service dealer locater section of their web site located at: http://www.repairtechinc.com/locate.asp, it states: "these service locations include both affiliated and unaffiliated RepairTech Repair Centers...upon authorization, you may use any one of the listed centers...If your chosen Repair Center is unaffiliated with RepairTech have them contact us so they, too, can join the growing RepairTech family!" Does this mean there may be no service center in any given area? Isn't it a basic prerequisite to any extended warranty plan that a service dealer network exists? Is there any one stupid enough to think when a repair is needed, he can simply grab any punk off the street, call the company to ask that the clown be added to the network, and then only to realize that the authorization is refused by the company after all? Furthermore, the first year coverage of the warranty is from a manufacturer automatically. After the first year of "free ride" is over, will the company be there for a consumer? That is why it is critical that a well established warranty plan is underwritten by an AA or AAA rated insurance company. In this case, where is the insurance for a warranty itself? Is this highly possible that such a company simply vanishes into thin air without paying any service cost before the first year manufacturer warranty expires?

  • The following information is also helpful.

  • In checking with the New York Better Business Bureau(Disclaimer: pac-2000.com is not affiliated with the Better Business Bureau and any links are to a third-party website, the content of which is controlled by the the Better Business Bureau) if you find out a site has many different names (or sites), none of which has a satisfactory record, you know it is probably the Brooklyn attitude.
  • If you suspect, among the so-called on-line reviews, the good ones are self-serving (they rate themselves!) and the bad ones are in match with the Better Business Bureau records (Disclaimer: pac-2000.com is not affiliated with the Better Business Bureau and any links are to a third-party website, the content of which is controlled by the the Better Business Bureau), you know it is probably the Brooklyn attitude .
  • If you see a web site that is not even registered in New York or New Jersey business entity database, you know it is probably the Brooklyn attitude .

  • Of course, we do not consider these sites for our LPP.
